How to Become the Most Productive and Fulfilled Person you know in 2019

As we kick off a new year, it is the perfect time to reflect and plan on how you will make 2019 your best year yet. I can help by providing you with three practical strategies that you can put into action immediately to move one step closer to becoming the most productive and fulfilled person you know in 2019. How, you might ask? FOCUS!! Establishing clear goals and priorities, mastering your success mindset, and optimizing your energy – These three practical strategies will help you operate at peak performance with a high level of fulfillment. Let's dive a little deeper into each.

 Strategy #1 – Establish Clear Goals and Priorities

We will only ever have 24 hours in the day and therefore, we need to make intentional decisions on where we focus our energy and attention. It’s all about trade offs, right?! Setting goals and priorities help us understand the trade offs we want to make and determine how we spend our time in alignment with what we want and what matters most.

Taking time to reflect on what matters to you, what you want to achieve and what you need to focus on daily to achieve what you want is time well spent. Honestly, very few people actually take the time to do this and the people that do happen to be the most successful in the world. Here are a few simple questions that can jumpstart you on your 2019 goal and priority setting journey…

 Define What you WANT (Your Goals)

  • This time next year, what would make you say you had an amazing 2019 year?

  • What do you want to have achieved? Why do you want to achieve this? What steps will you take to execute against the goal in the next year? 

  • What impact do you want to have made by this time next year?

  • What do you want your reputation to be? i.e. What do you want others to say about you when you are not in the room?

  • How do you want to feel?

When defining what you want, consider all dimensions of your life - Career, Wealth, Learning and Development, Health, Relationships [love, friends, family], Mindset, Passions & Experiences and Purpose. Why? because you are the most productive and fulfilled when you have balanced fulfillment across all areas of your life.

 Define your PRIORITIES

  • What do you need to focus on daily to bring you closer to reaching those goals?

 Try this Priority Pare Down Exercise:

  1. Write out all the responsibilities that you currently have on your plate across all dimensions of your life including Career, Wealth, Learning and Development, Health, Relationships [love, friends, family], Mindset, Passions & Experiences, Purpose

  2. Circle the responsibilities that align to your goals

  3. For those that do not align to your goals (not circled), think about how can you eliminate, automate, delegate or delay them to get them off your plate.

Remember, writing your goals and priorities down on paper and reflecting on them often will keep them front of mind and help you say NO to things that don’t align, ultimately leading to better performance, success and greater fulfillment.

Strategy #2 - Master your Success Mindset

Your mindset is your set of beliefs (what you believe to be true) about yourself and the world around you and it plays a powerful role in determining your achievement and success. How? Well, your beliefs lead to your thoughts, your thoughts create feelings, your feelings lead to actions and your actions determine your results. So if you want to change your results, you need to change your beliefs and thoughts!!

It is very common to have limiting beliefs and negative thoughts that are standing in your way to peak performance and success. The first step to cleaning these up is AWARENESS. What are your limiting beliefs? What are your negative thoughts? How are they are impacting you? Think about a situation in your life that you are challenged with and fill in the blank – “I can’t ______ because [limiting belief]”. Pay close attention to the stories that you tell yourself while recognizing that not everything you think is true. Once you are aware of your limiting beliefs and negative thoughts, then you can take focused action to change them.

Don’t underestimate the power of a success mindset in helping you reach your goals and dreams. Henry Ford says it best, “Whether you think you can or think you can, you are usually right”.

Strategy #3 - Optimize your Energy

Every body is different and works best under different environmental and physical conditions. To find out what is best for you requires some focused experimentation. Here are a few simple questions to help you identify your peak performance energy formula:

  • Think back to a day when you felt highly energized and productive…What did you eat? How long did you sleep? How did you move your body? Who were you around? What were you doing? How long were you outside/in nature? What kind of self care activities did you do?

  • Think back to a day when you felt sluggish and low energy …What did you eat? How long did you sleep? How did you move your body? Who were you around? What were you doing? How long were you outside/in nature? What kind of self care activities did you do?

  • Monitor and experiment over time to identify the conditions in which you are operating at your best and your worst. How can you adjust your environment/ schedule to integrate more of the highly energized actions and less of the sluggish low energy actions into your day?

Setting clear goals and priorities, mastering your mindset and optimizing your energy are three key strategies that if implemented will bring you one step closer to becoming the most productive and fulfilled person you know in 2019. FOCUSING on these three strategies makes it possible to achieve more of what matters while experiencing more joy, fulfillment and calm in your day-to-day life.
