How Splash Strategy came to be
I must have read hundreds of articles and a whole shelf full of management books before I was faced with the truth I’d wanted to ignore….
Performance and hard work will only get me so far in my career.
I came to the realization that if I wanted to be an exceptional leader, I needed people advocating and supporting me across all levels of the organization and this required being both task-focused, AND people-focused.
As a heavily task-focused person, I hustled and delivered high quality results. When I was passed over for a promotion, I started to feel defeated and saw my career plateauing.
I was great at driving results, but I wasn’t well-liked, and some teams didn’t want to work with me at all. My determination to complete the task and get to the end result had made me ruthless, I held others to the high standards and expectations that I held myself and as a result I made others feel like they weren’t good enough.
I realized I had a weakness, and that I had to address it if I was to ever progress to the level I desired. Ever the task-master, I made it my focus - my task - to develop my soft skills; my team work, my listening skills, my empathy.
The very skills I’d previously dismissed as ‘fluffy’ and ‘weak’ were hard to get to grips with. I took some strategic sideways and backwards steps to flesh out my knowledge and, along with some purposeful mentorship and a big slice of humble pie, I was able to grow into the kind of leader I looked up to, and unlock my seat at the table at a whole new level. To my surprise, I was able to deliver greater results faster by investing time and effort into helping the people around me work at their potential.
With fresh eyes and new skills, came a renewed sense of purpose. Having had the privilege of access to mentorship and guidance, I wanted to pay it forward somehow. The conversations helping my peers, women in particular, plan their own career pathways were some of the most fulfilling I’d had, and I knew there was more I had to share with the world.
Now, I want to pass on the confidence and insight given to me, and support others in creating the career they deserve, through my business, Splash Strategy.
You have a critical path for your internal and client projects, so why is your own career different? Too many talented people aren’t getting to where they want to be, simply because they haven’t taken the time to think about who they are, what they want and how they will get what they want and putting it down on paper.
There is no denying that one’s career success is influenced by their level of fulfillment across other areas of their lives. I work with my clients to integrate all elements of their lives, such as relationships and health, in order to build tailored strategies that are both impactful and sustainable.
It’s my hope and ambition for the future to see more motivated and competent women represented at all levels of the corporate ladder. I want to empower leaders to develop performance and place the best person into every role within their team, and see more women placed into leadership and decision-making roles.
I truly believe that the more competent you are, the more responsibility you have to make yourself visible and build the relationships required to reach new heights. I want to help people like me, who were reaching limits of their success, to tap into their potential and take their success to the next level.
